A new bug was recently discovered on Apple devices that may have left user data vulnerable for years. The flaw is currently being addressed and resolved by Apple Inc.
As Reuters says, “An Apple spokesman acknowledged that a vulnerability exists in Apple’s software for email on iPhones and iPads, known as the Mail app, and that the company had developed a fix, which will be rolled out in a forthcoming update on millions of devices it has sold globally.
Apple declined to comment on Avraham’s research, which was published on Wednesday, that suggests the flaw could be triggered from afar and that it had already been exploited by hackers against high-profile users.”
The bug was originally discovered by a San Francisco forensics company as they were investigating a cyberattack from late 2019.
According to The Hacker News, “…both flaws existed in various models of iPhone and iPad for the last 8 years since the release of iOS 6 and, unfortunately, also affect the current iOS 13.4.1 with no patch yet update available for the regular versions.”
What is most worrisome is that several hackers are already exploiting this flaw and have been for at least two years.
Until this is resolved, Apple users are being instructed to not use the built-in Mail app on their iPhones and iPads.
